- Election policy statement:
- Thursday, May 6, will be a historic day for Scorland. You will have the chance to choose members for the first Scottish Parliament in nearly 300 years. I am proud to be taking part in this election and proud to offer myself as your Scottish Conservative candidate in Maryhill.
In doing that I have one overriding aim. It is to make this Parliament work, and deliver the best services in the United Kingdom. That is what we have to concentrate on - delivering better health, housing, education and transport.
Labour has shown it cannot do that in two years of national government at Westminster and many years of local government in Glasgow and other parts of Scotland. While our taxes have been put up since 1997, our basic services have not improved but been stretched to the limit. Ministers, MPs and councillors have had to resign in disgrace.
Faced with all this, we must not waste time at Holyrood in arguments caused by the Nationalists about cutting Scotland off from the rest of Britain. Why should we be forced to choose between Scottish and British when we can continue to enjoy the benefits of being both?
If in Scotland we are to have the services we deserve, we need politicians committed to delivering them to the highest standard at a price we can afford. Scottish Conservatives promise to do that for you.
We can give that promise because we have the policies to make Scotland prosperous. We support Scots who want to get on in the world and better themselves. Scots who believe in the value of education and encourage their children. Scots who recognise that welath has to be created before it can be spent. Only then can we have a successful economy able to spread its benefits widely, able to deliver first-class public services to everyone.
Scottish Conservatives believe in government which respects national and cultural identities, government which is democratically accountable, government which rewards enterprise, government which knows its limits, government which works with the people, government which does not try to do everything for them or tell them what to do.
Put Scotland first - and back the Scottish Conservatives.
