- Labour working for you in Argyll & Bute
Hugh's priorities are public services, a stronger economy, and dignity for pensioners. Labour together in the Scottish and UK Governments is investing more than ever in Argyll & Bute.
- A better deal for Argyll & Bute Council
- Free nursing and personal care for older people
- £80m for better schools in Argyll & Bute
- Crime clear up rates at a post-war high
Please help to secure these improvements. Labour's never been closer to winning in Argyll & Bute. Imagine how much better we could do with a Labour MSP - taking our priorities to the heart of Scotland's government.
The Raven family
Labour has made available a free nursery place for every three and four year old. This gives a better start for children, a welcome break for carers, and allows more parents than ever to take up part-time work.
Like thousands of others, Hugh's family has benefited from Labour's policy.
Kenny McIntyre, Oban
"Labour has done more to tackle crime."
With over thirty new CCTV installations in Argyll & Bute, the latest figures show a fifteen per cent increase in the proportion of crimes being cleared up in the Strathclyde area. Argyll and Bute's detection rates are the best in the region.
More support for Gaelic
With more funding for Gaelic education, nearly 600 Argyll & Bute primary schoolchildren are now taught Gaelic.
The new Columba Centre on Islay, initiated by Labour's Brian Wilson, has brought new impetus to the Gaelic revival. Labour has also set up Bord Gaidhlig na h-Alba.
An increasingly marginal seat
Press and Journal, 9th June 2001: "A shock swing to Labour saw the party storm past the finishing line in second place ... just 1653 behind the Liberal Democrats."
Labour is now the challenger m Argyll and Bute.
Hugh Raven - your Labour candidate for Argyll & Bute
Argyll & Bute is more prosperous under Labour. More people are in work than ever, with unemployment well below the Scottish average. Wages are increasing, and business start-ups are the highest of any district in the region.
But there's more to do. We need continued investment in transport and public services, and more job and study opportunities for young people. Only with Labour can you be sure of further investment in the services that matter most to local people.
