- Susan Wilson : nurse
As a nurse I have always found Rita interested in what I have to say about health matters. I know she has done a power of work as a member of the Health Board. Rita will be a real asset to the Scottish Parliament in promoting health improvement and initiatives like the provision of drinking water for schoolchildren.
Jimmy Steven : pensioner
Labour's policies have been making a real difference for pensioners - the winter fuel payments, rises in basic pension, free personal care and free off peak bus travel. Rita has been a great champion of older people locally and as our MSP she will keep up the good work and make sure our needs stay high up the agenda.
Ian Pearson : businessman
During my many years in banking I got to know Rita well as a local business woman. Her experience and knowledge of the business side of life will be a real advantage to her in the Scottish Parliament. She will be a great champion of Labour's policies for enterprise and growth and employment opportunities for all.
Rosetta Pirie : teacher
Rita taught alongside me at Greenwood Academy in Irvine where she was a Geography and Modern Studies teacher. With her teaching experience, Rita will be able to play an invaluable part in Labour's drive to improve our schools, invest in the education system and develop our colleges and universities.
Labour working for you in Ayr Constituency
Rita Miller with Scotland's First Minister, Jack McConnell during a recent visit to Prestwick. Labour is delivering for the people of Ayr Constituency.
- Record numbers in work
- Youth apprenticeships doubled
- Local pensioners benefiting
- A nursery place for every three and four year old
Scotland wins from having a Labour Government at Westminster working with a Labour led Scottish Executive. Here in Ayr Constituency people will benefit from having Rita Miller as their MSP, working hand in hand with local MP Sandra Osborne
Rita on Transport
I will make sure that the improvements to the A77 bring maximum benefit to the Ayrshire economy. Free off peak bus travel for older people is already proving a great success. With the Scottish Parliament and Westminster working together Glasgow Prestwick International Airport can go from strength to strength.
Rita on Education
Our children deserve first class school buildings and I will work closely with the Council to make sure the extra resources from the Scottish Executive achieve this. Labour aims to go on reducing class sizes, improving literacy and attainment, and providing more places in colleges and universities.
Rita on Crime
I want to see the powers put in place by the Scottish Parliament to tackle drug dealers, to act against anti social neighbours, and deal positively with youth offending, make a real difference in Ayr Constituency. I will work closely with the Police and other services to make our communities safer and to give our young people a brighter future.
Rita on Health
I want to see Ayr Constituency benefit from extra investment in health which the Scottish Parliament is able to make as a result of the sound UK economy. There will be 600 new consultants and 1500 more nurses and midwives in the Scottish Health Service over the next three years. The Tories oppose all this because they don't believe in the NHS
Dear Voter
I have lived and worked in Ayrshire for over 26 years and in Ayr for the past 11 years. With my husband Ian, we have brought up our family here - Graeme is now a Firefighter and Jenny is trained in marketing.
I was brought up in a Glasgow housing scheme, went on to University and into teaching. As a parent, a carer, teacher and then a business person, I have a background that helps me relate well to people. I have never been afraid to stand up for people either, as my record as a local councillor shows.
I have represented Scottish Local Government at a national level and was the Labour Candidate in Ayr at the 2000 Scottish Parliament by-election,
I am proud of what Labour has achieved in the four short years since it set up the Scottish Parliament - free personal care for older people, a free nursery place for every three and four year old, free local off peak bus travel for pensioners, new powers to seize the assets of drug dealers. We now need a second term to build on that good start.
Elections in Ayr Constituency are always close and your vote really counts. A vote for anyone else, or just not voting, can only help the Tories. So please vote Labour on May 1st and help elect me as your MSP to work for you alongside your Labour MP, Sandra Osborne.
Yours faithfully
Rita Miller
