- Older People in the Community
Labour is aware that the growth of the population in Galloway & Upper Nithsdale over the age of 60 is projected to rise to around 36%. I will fight for the policies to support the older people in this community. A Labour Scottish Executive is committed to listening to the particular needs of the older community.
Economic Regeneration
Our area is vulnerable to economic decisions being taken from outside of our region. I'm committed to fighting for major investment in Stranraer harbour, investment in our rural villages and addressing the problems in Upper Nithsdale. I will also work more jobs and more opportunies for our young people.
Health in our Local Community
I will build on Labour's commitment to a new Stranraer hospital by working to secure the future of all our local community hospitals and health centres. I'm committed to working with local GPs, nurses and other health professionals to respond to you and your families health needs as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Rural Transport
I will ensure that Labour will build on recent commitments to improve the A76 and the A75. Better road and rails links are needed to attract and secure local jobs and investment in the economy. Our rural community also needs a sytem that links up all public transport. I will work to bring the agencies together to make it happen.
Labour working for you in Galloway & Upper Nithsdale Constituency
This constituency needs a strong, committed MSP to serve the interests of everyone. Norma Hart, born, educated and working locally, has the energy and commitment to be that MSP. Scottish Labour will:
- Reduce class sizes in secondary schools
- Extend off-peak bus travel for pensioners
- Introduce tougher sentences for drug dealers
- Reduce waiting times for GP appointments
Only Scottish Labour is committed to improving our public services and transforming our rural communities. Only a Labour MSP can give your constituency a voice at the heart of government.
Education for All
Labour has reduced class sizes in the early years of primary school and provided a free nursery place for all 3 and 4 year olds. In the next four years we will reduce class sizes for Maths and English in the key stages of secondary school. We will do this by attracting new teachers and - into our schools.
Safer Communities
Labour has worked with our police to target drug dealers with major successes in our region. In the next four years we will introduce tougher sentences for drug dealers. We need a tough approach to punishment - punishment that is fast and fits the crime. We will also work with the police to reduce petty crime on our streets.
Dignity for Older People
Labour has already provided free local bus travel for pensioners. This will be extended free off-peak bus travel for pensioners, and the disabled, to all journeys Scotland-wide. Labour will also extend the free central heating gaurantee for pensioners so that all those over 80 can have outdated sytems replaced.
More Jobs for Young People
Labour will address the skill shortages across all sectors of the economy by increasing the number of modern apprenticeships by 50%. This will encourage our young people to stay in the area, by creating real opportunities and a solid future for them and the rural communities in which they live.
Norma Hart, your Labour candidate for Galloway & Upper Nithsdale, will be your voice for rural communities in the Scottish Parliament.
Scottish Labour already has delivered on its pledges: free personal care for the elderly; a free nursery place for every 3 and 4 year old; student tuition fees waived; more police officers than ever before. But, there is much more to do! We will reduce class sizes for Maths and English in the early years of secondary school and waiting times for an operation in the NHS. We promise more teachers, more nurses, more police, tougher action against drug dealers and increased job opportunities here in Galloway and Upper Nithsdale.
