The Scottish Parliament has delivered real improvements for the people of Cathcart constituency over the past four years:
Free central heating for older people, a nursery place for all three and four year olds and a reduction of more than a third in unemployment (particularly young people).
My pledge for the next four years is to work on behalf of Cathcart to develop these achievements. I will also continue to argue for the maximum amount of beds and treatments at the new Victoria day care hospital, which will provide state of the art facilities, treating 82% of current acute patients, when it opens in early 2007.
The Scottish Labour Party - Delivering for Cathcart
Mike Watson, Scottish Labour's Candidate for the Glasgow Cathcart Constituency says:
"In the first four years of our young parliament of course there have been disappointments - no institution is perfect - but there have been real achievements, too. Better services such as schools being rebuilt or refurbished, or the provision for elderly people of free nursing and personal care and free bus travel.
New laws with tougher action on drug criminals and sex offenders, and new rights for victims of crime.
A new teachers' contract to deliver higher standards and sports development officers in 80% of all Scottish secondary schools to increase levels of physical activity.
But that is just the beginning. Labour's commitment to putting investment in our public services first for the people of Scotland will mean for Cathcart:
- A new Victoria day care hospital on an adjacent site, opening in 2007 before the present one closes. This will be supported by an improved ambulance emergency service.
- More proper apprenticeships to prepare our young people for sustainable careers
- New powers to deal with youth disorder by extending Anti-Social Behaviour Orders to under 16s and making parents accept responsibility for their children.
- Free bus travel anywhere in Scotland for elderly and disabled people and half fare travel for young people in full-time education or training.
- More doctors, nurses and midwives as training courses increase the number of those gaining qualifications.
On the 1st of May, Scotland will elect those who will serve for the second term of our Scottish Parliament. I believe we need to build on the platform of economic stability and the major investments made in public services during the past four years to create the kind of Scotland we can all be proud to call home. I want to continue to make a contribution to that on behalf of our communities in Cathcart and I ask you to support me with your vote."
Mike Watson, your Labour candidate for Glasgow Cathcart
In 1999 I asked for your support to help build a better Scotland, a better Glasgow and a better Cathcart. Four years on, Labour in the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Executive have worked hard to bring about real improvements in Cathcart. This was possible only because we invested in people, reducing unemployment in this constituency by 38%; in our older people, providing dignity in retirement through free nursing and personal care; in our younger people through the rebuilding or refurbishment of all our local secondary schools; and by investing record amounts in our essential public services. If you share my vision of greater opportunity and a fairer society for everyone in Cathcart I ask you to re-elect me by using your vote for Scottish Labour on the 1st of May.
Mike Watson
Labour working for you in Glasgow Cathcart
A vote for Scottish Labour on the 1st of May will allow us to invest in Scotland's people. Cat heart will benefit from Labour's pledges to the people of Scotland:
- 600 more doctors by 2006
- 1500 more nurses and midwives by 2006
- 200 more schools built or renewed by 2006
- 30,000 more modern apprenticeships by 2007
Only Scottish Labour will put investment in our public as the first priority for the next four years.
A fairer deal for the elderly
Mike Watson says: "Scottish Labour has provided greater security for people in retirement through a £250m investment in free personal and nursing care, free local bus well free central heating and home insulation. A vote for Scottish Labour will enable us to build on these achievements in the next four years."
Tackling crime and its causes
Mike Watson says: "A vote for Scottish Labour will guarantee a further £90m extra for the police to fight serious crime in Scotland. More police on our streets, a crack-down on drug-related crime and making parents accept responsibility for their children will be our priorities in building safer communities."
Investing in Public Services
Mike Watson says: "A vote for Scottish Labour will see record investment in our public services - we will spend £2bn more on the NHS and £158m more on education and young people in Scotland by 2006. We created the NHS and we are determined to continue rebuilding it as a better service free for everyone who uses it."
Opportunities for young people
Mike Watson says: "Our young people deserve opportunities to make the most of their lives. A vote for Scottish Labour will mean more investment in education including free music lessons plus school and community sporting activities. Further 30,000 more modern apprenticeships will help them to prepare for sustainable careers.
