- Dear Voter
It has been my privilege to serve as the Labour MSP for Glasgow Rutherglen since 1999.
Labour has achieved much since 1999 - the introduction of free personal and nursing care; free off peak travel for every one of this constituency's 13,000 pensioners and disabled people; free central heating for the elderly; and record investment in Scotland's public services to name but a few.
As a former nurse, I am delighted that Labour's first term has started to turn around the 18 years of Tory misrule and we are making real steps towards achieving 21st century healthcare.
However, despite everything we have achieved, much remains to be done. I believe that the priorities we face are raising standards in our schools, looking after our elderly, providing first class health services, ensuring job opportunities and cracking down on crime.
As a nation we have a choice between two futures: divorce or working together for better public services. I want to work for better public services, a safer society and a prosperous economy - not file for divorce from the rest of the UK.
If re-elected, I will continue to work with the local communities in Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Kings Park and Toryglen on these priorities.
Yours faithfully
Janis Hughes
A lot done, but a lot to do
That is Labour's message in this election. Our plans for a second term build on the real achievements we have made in our first term. Making Scotland an even better place to live cannot happen overnight. It is only through sustained investment, steady progress and strategic reforms that lasting change can occur.
Building quality public services
In a second term Labour will develop excellent education facilities, better healthcare and ensure pensioners have the right to dignity in their retirement.
Through Labour in government in Scotland and the UK we can rely on the stability needed for long term investment.
Building stronger communities
Scotland is a good place to live, but Labour wants to make it even better. Quality of life is about the homes we live in, the streets walk along, the buildings and fabric of our community. Labour's commitment to tackling social exclusion is at the heart of all we do. Together with tough measures to penalise those who damage our community.
The alternatives...
The choice that will face voters on 1 May is clear:
More teachers, nurses and police with Labour or cuts to pay for the costs of an expensive divorce under the SNP or a 20% cut in public services under the Tories.
Labour working for you in Glasgow Rutherglen constituency!
In the past four years Janis Hughes has worked with the community. A local office plus surgeries and newsletters. Supporting and campaigning for our local priorities
- looking after our elderly
- raising school standards
- building a first class NHS
- cracking down on crime
These are Labour's priorities. Working together for better public services, a safer society and a prosperous economy.
Looking after our elderly
Labour has delivered free personal and nursing care for all those who need it. Free off-peak local bus travel benefiting more than 13,000 people in this constituency. Free central heating and much more support for older people.
Raising school standards
Labour has delivered 100 new or refurbished schools with smaller class sizes In Primary 1, 2 and 3. A pre-school education place for every 3 and 4 year old. Tuition fees scrapped and bursaries for young students from low income families. Giving everyone the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
Building a first class NHS
Labour has delivered the largest ever programme of new and upgraded health care facilities supported by 1400 nurses and doctors. Tackling our killer diseases including a 25% drop in deaths from heart disease. Begun a long term campaign to create a healthier Scotland.
Cracking down on crime
Labour has delivered record levels of police and a clear-up rate that has risen to a post-war high. A Drug Enforcement Agency to catch drug dealers plus new powers to confiscate their assets. Legal powers to act against anti-social neighbours. We want communities safe from crime and also safe from the fear of crime.
A lot done, a lot to do. If re-elected Janis Hughes will seek to build on the strong foundations which have brought real benefits to local communities in Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Kings Park and Toryglen.
Building the strong and stable economy that gives the stability to deliver long term investment in our public services. Janis Hughes will continue to put schools, healthcare and the fight against crime first.
