Election policy statement:
Choices and opportunities for the next four years

Making the difference on Crime
Under Justice Minister, Jim Wallace, police numbers have risen to record levels. In the next parliament we will take effective action that actually deals with the problem of crime in our communities. We will:
- continue to support the highest number of police officers in Scotland
- ensure they get the back-up they need to spend more time on the beat
- take extra steps to reduce youth crime

Making the difference for our NHS
The Liberal Democrats believe it is better to take steps to prevent illness. We want to see a healthier Scotland, and will:
- re-introduce free eye and dental check-ups
- improve access to NHS dentists, and opening a new dental school in Aberdeen spend more on health promotion, and action to prevent illness and encourage healthier lifestyles

Making the difference in Education
The Liberal Democrats have secured the abolition of tuition fees for Scottish students studying at Scottish universities, and delivered an improved pay deal for teachers. We will:
- continue to tackle repairs and improvements to Scotland's schools
- oppose any plans to charge students 'top-up fees', as are being introduced by Labour at Westminster

Making the difference for the Environment
The Liberal Democrats believe we must ensure a sustainbale future for our communities. We will:
- take steps to ensure local Councils recycle at least 25% of household waste
- promote public transport, including plans for a commuter rail link for the North-east
- help make Scotland a world-leader in renewable energy technology

"The Liberal Democrats have made a real difference in the first Scottish Parliament, delivering free personal care for the elderly, the abolition of student tuition fees, and raising police numbers to record levels.
"Every extra Liberal Democrat vote on May 1st will help us deliver even more for the people of Scotland."
Dr Eleanor Anderson

Your vote can make the difference...

In Tackling Crime
Jim Wallace has increased police numbers to record levels to tackle crime. Whilst others talk tough on crime, Scottish Liberal Democrats will take effective action that actually deals with the problem of crime in our communities.

For Scotland's Elderly
Thanks to the Liberal Democrats, Scotland's elderly no longer have to pay for their personal care. Under Labour in the rest of the UK they still do.
The new warm homes initiative and free off-peak travel are improving the lives of Scotland's pensioners.

For Scotland's Students
Liberal Democrats scrapped tuition fees and restored grants for Scottish students studying in Scotland.
We will oppose any plans to introduce "top-up" fees being proposed by the Labour Government in Westminster.

Better Health for All
Liberal Democrats have insisted on the drive for health promotion. We have already started to introduce radical changes to keep Scots healthy and make sure people get treated more quickly. Liberal Democrats will abolish charges for eye and dental check-ups.

Protect the Environment & Create Jobs
With ambitious new targets for recycling and renewable energy set by the Liberal Democrats, Scotland is now working to become amongst the best in Europe.
Liberal Democrats will develop jobs in environmental industries like renewable energy, where Scotland can lead the world.

Better Schools
Liberal Democrats in Government in Scotland have guaranteed a nursery place for every three and four year old child, spent record amounts on school books and equipment, started to tackle the backlog of school repairs and ensured a fair pay deal for our teachers.
Since the Scottish Parliament started, the Liberal Democrats have made the difference...
- free care for the elderly
- student tuition fees scrapped
- grants re-introduced
- 500 new police officers across Scotland
- better pay deal for teachers
- freedom of information
"If you look at the key differences between government policies in England and in Scotland, the striking thing is that it is the Liberal Democrats who are making that difference."
Jim Wallace

Challenging Labour in Aberdeen Central
A recent Herald opinion poll showed the Liberal Democrats would gain Aberdeen Central from Labour on May 1st, while in December, the Liberal Democrats won Aberdeen Central's Langstane ward from Labour in a key by-election.
