Kevin Lang's key priorities...
An NHS to be proud of...
Kevin Lang relies on the NHS, just like other people. Thanks to the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish Government has recruited 570 extra doctors and 840 extra nurses.
Waiting times have been redeuced for those waiting the longest and £480 million invested in improved hospitals including the local Western General. There is still a lot more to do.
The Scottish Liberal Democrats will:
- provide free eye and dental check ups;
- focus on health promotion to improve Scotland's long term health;
- expand and improve GP led services;
- increase the number of beds available for hospital treatment and reduce waiting times and
- guarantee access of NHS dentistry.
Investing in education
Having benefited from a University education, Kevin Lang supported the Liberal Democrat demands for an end to student tuition fees in Scotland. In England, tuition fees remain, with Labour now considering EVEN MORE costs for students.
As part of the Scottish Government, the Liberal Democrats have made education their number one priority. Thanks to the Lib Dems, applications to become teachers have doubled and more money has been spent on books and equipment.
The Scottish Liberal Democrats will;
- reduce class sizes, especially in transition years.
- pursue a major school rebuilding and refurbishment programme and
- put pressure on the Westminster Government to raise the threshold for paying back student grants.
ACTION ON CRIME: Thanks to Jim Wallace and the Liberal Democrats, police numbers have been increased to record levels. Kevin Lang wants to see local police in the Airdrie area having the resources they need to spend more time on the streets and less time on paperwork.
ACTION FOR OUR AREA: Kevin Lang wants to protect the greenbelt and local landmarks. He also supports the campaign to Kirk O'Shotts church.
ACTION FOR PENSIONERS: Kevin Lang backed the successful Lib Dem fight for free personal care for the elderly and the delivery of off-peak bus travel to all pensioners.
Charles Kennedy says:
"I've known Kevin Lang for many years and know he will make a first class MSP for Airdrie & Shotts. With your support, Kevin can fight for better schools, improved hospital services and more public transport."
Liberal Democrats make the difference
A tale of two countries...
...in Scotland
In Scotland, student tuition fees have been abolished and maintenance grants brought back. University applications are now rising again.
In Scotland, personal and nursing care for the elderly is now free saving pensioners up to £210 a week, helping thousands to avoid losing their homes to pay for care.
In Scotland, teachers have backed and benefited from an improved deal on pay and conditions.
...in England
In England, tuition fees remain. The Westminster Government have announced plans for extra 'top up fees' of up to £3,000 a year.
In England, only nursing care is paid for by the Government with many pensioners having to sell their houses to pay for personal care.
In England, the Government have faced strikes by teachers because of their raw deal.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Liberal Democrats have been part of Scotland's Partnership Government. In England, Labour rule without Lib Dem influence.
