LIKE that of all mountainous countries, the rainfaIl of Scotland is not low. It is not, however, so high as most people suppose, the reason being that the majority of tourists visit it during August, which, as a rule, is the wettest month of the whole summer season. Their experiences in Wales, the Lakes or Norway would in August be very similar and for the same reason, that hills catch the rain.
The pleasantest months for weather and also because there are not too many visitors, are unquestionably June and July. September, too, is often quite good. May, although not so warm, has the additional attraction of the spring flowers. In October the colours are lovely, and the weather is often remarkably good, but the days are shorter.
The Highland Games, which are always interesting, are in most places held in August and September. The roads, almost everywhere, are excellent for motoring.

DUNTROON CASTLE, CRINAN. Standing like a watch tower on the Northern shore of the bay, the Castle has been a stronghold of the Campbells since ancient days. It was occupied as late as 1899.
