One of a series of six cartoons published in the booklet 'The Catholic Workingman' by John Wheatley, published by the Catholic Socialist Society. John Wheatley's aim was to encourage fellow Irish men and women to examine the principles of socialism and decide for themselves, without any interference from the Catholic Church, the merits or otherwise of socialism as a political creed.
The co-founder of the Catholic Socialist Society and political cartoonist of the 'The Catholic Workingman', William Regan, used the historical prejudices of the Irish-catholic community to great effect in attracting many Irish-catholics in Scotland to the socialist cause.
Regan used the themes of Irish home rule, anti-British establishment and absentee landlordism, and successfully fused these issues around socialist doctrine to advance the cause of the Independent Labour Party within the Irish-catholic community in Scotland.
