Built at the Hyde Park works of the North British Locomotive Company in the mid 1950s, this Garratt articulated steam locomotive, number 4112, was acquired by Springburn Museum in 1990. It was purchased by the museum from the 4160 Society who had transported it back from its original country of service, South Africa, and whose engine runs on the West Somerset Railway.
A once-familiar sight in Springburn was of lorries or traction engines hauling Springburn built locomotives through the streets on the way to the docks for export.
In the centre is a large boiler carried on a frame like a girder bridge. Supporting each end are two symmetrical chassis, each with its own wheels, cylinders and motion. Its wheel formation is 2-4-8 and 4-8-2. The Garratt is currently housed in Summerlee Heritage Trust in Coatbridge.
