Springburn in transition

Springburn in transition: a view of urban desolation, 1987

Described in 1987 as a scene of 'urban desolation', this view from the top of one of Springburn's tower blocks was included in the 1987 exhibition 'A Place to Stay', a pictorial history of housing in Springburn over the ages.

The brownfield site in the foreground was once occupied by the Hyde Park Works of the North British Locomotive Company. Bottom left is the storage yard of the former Teacher's Whisky bottling plant. In the distance is Sighthill, a 1960s housing scheme consisting of ten massive tower blocks.

At the bottom left is Blindcraft, one of Springburn's largest employers, and bottom right is Springburn train station and the main railway line between Glasgow and Cumbernauld.
