Hyde Park ward, Springburn Hospital, 1914-1918

Springburn Hospital had a capacity of 400 beds, divided between five large wards, known as Hyde Park, Atlas, Queen's Park, Victoria and Springburn. There was also an operating theatre, an X-ray room, a recreation room, bedrooms and a kitchen. The entrance to the hospital was at the side of the building, in Adamswell Street.

Patients were transported to the hospital on specially converted 'ambulance trains' built in the local works. Resident staff included a medical superintendent, five assistants, a matron, eight ward sisters, 17 nurses, 30 workers from Voluntary Aid Detachment, as well as cooks, maids and orderlies.

Ironically, as well as building tanks, aeroplanes, weapons and munitions for the war, the nearby 'Mons' and 'Marne' factories of the Atlas and Hyde Park works also made artificial limbs for wounded servicemen. By the closing day on 21 May 1919, a total of 8211 servicemen had been treated.
