The North British Locomotive Company's Musical Appreciation Society performed a variety of music, including pieces by Gilbert and Sullivan. Their members tended to come from the drawing office, with some from the clerical staff.
Other clubs existed for badminton, football and boxing, the latter being particularly popular among the working men in the factories. The Hyde Park Works even produced a world featherweight champion, Peter Keenan, under the personal direction of the joint managing director William Douglas Lorimer.
The North British Locomotive Company published its own newspaper, in which employees could read about the activities of their clubs, and of other aspects of N B Loco social life generally.
