Springburn College

Springburn College dates from 1909, when it was opened by The Rt. Hon. the Earl of Rosebery as the headquarters of the North British Locomotive Company. Above the doorway, on either side of an NB Atlantic locomotive, are female figures of Speed and Science. Inside, across the foyer, are three magnificent stained glass windows, a war memorial by William Meikle & Sons. Unveiled in 1921 it shows the crests of the Scottish regiments, a Scottish soldier, a smith at an anvil and a woman at a lathe. In both World Wars the women of Springburn replaced the men who had been called up. Doing work previously considered to be too heavy for them, they manufactured great quantities of armaments, as well as locomotives, carriages and wagons. During World War I a part of the building was used as a Red Cross hospital for wounded soldiers.
