War encourage the development of technology and new weapons, such as tanks. The North British Locomotive Company converted part of their operations to producing munitions, guns, tanks, and aeroplanes for the war effort.

At the time of the outbreak of war, the NBL company were building two new buildings designed for special departments of their locomotive workshops. These buildings were allocated to shell production and sea mines. They were known as the 'Mons' shell factory and the 'Marne' factory. The Administration building became a military hospital.

Locomotives continued to be manufactured, and women also worked in the locomotive shops.
