The failure of the Allies and of the Germans to outflank each other during the 'Race to the Sea' at the beginning of the war in France and Belgium marked the end of the movement the armies. Years of stagnation and stalemate followed as the opposing armies created a line of static trenches separated by barbed wire covering a narrow strip of 'no man's land'. During the trench warfare soldiers frequently risked their lives by running out into the no man's land between the trenches to bring in wounded comrades for aid or the dead for decent burial.
