DUGALD BANNATYNE

DUGALD BANNATYNE. - In Tait's Directory, the address of the firm is given Johnston, Bannatine & Co., hoziers, Trongate; and in Jones', Johnston, Bannatyne & Co., stocking manufacturers; warehouse, north side Ingram Street. John Bannatyne, a brother of Dugald, was also a partner in the firm. A company was formed in the latter part of last century for the extension of Glasgow, of which Mr. Bannatyne was a principal partner and director. The company built the greater part of Brunswick Street, Hutcheson Street, John Street, George Square, &c. Mr. Bannatyne was distinguished for his energy, probity, and intelligence. He was appointed postmaster in 1806; and on the death of Mr. Gilbert Hamilton he was unanimously elected secretary to the Chamber of Commerce, the duties of which office he discharged with great ability. Admirable portraits of Mr. Bannatyne and Mr. Hamilton, the property of the Chamber, are at present hung in the hall of the Merchants' House. Mr. Bannatyne died in 1842, having outlived the first directors of the Chamber, and all its first members for many years.
